Friday, August 27th, 2021 | 1-4pm (ET)-- Fully Online Workshop
Eligible for 3 CEs for LMHCs and Psychologists.
Description:
In this workshop, we will read excerpts from some of the major works by French philosopher and historian Michel Foucault. Works discussed will include Discipline and Punish and History of Sexuality, Volume I. For context, we will also read some selected interviews with him and posthumously published lectures by him. All readings will be in English. One aim of this workshop is to familiarize readers – whether clinicians or scholars – new to Foucault with an understanding of his striking critique of the categories of “reason” and “the subject” and his reconceptualization of power as “power relations.” In concert with this ambition, we will explore what Foucault has to offer psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and psychoanalytic thinkers despite and maybe even in light of his strong criticisms of “sexuality” as (in his words) “a ruse of power” and of sciences of the human (especially psychiatry and psychology) as ways of disciplining the body and producing individuals as such. Finally, reading with and against Foucault, we will consider possible points of contact between Foucault’s interest in what he calls the “care of the self” and the forms of care psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy can offer if we (the “we” of clinicians, but also the “we” of teachers) work from places of un-certainty, un-knowing, un-doing.
