In today's rapidly evolving world, the demand for ethical decision-making and wise judgment has never been more crucial. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of practical wisdom, or phronesis, within professional practice. Throughout this course, Kristján Kristjánsson Ph.D will delve into five key units to provide a holistic understanding of practical wisdom in professional practice with a sound philosophical basis that has been refined through well over a decade of empirical research.
In Unit 1: Introduction to Professional Ethics, Dr. Kristjánsson will lay the foundation by exploring the fundamental principles of professional ethics. The importance of ethical conduct, the challenges professionals face, and the ethical frameworks that guide decision-making will be examined. Then, building upon the understanding of professional ethics, in Unit 2: Key concepts, Dr. Kristjánsson will dive deeper into key concepts such as character, virtue, and phronesis—the practical wisdom necessary to make sound judgments in complex professional situations.
Unit 3: A neo-Aristotelian model of phronesis in professional practice will introduce a cutting-edge neo-Aristotelian model of phronesis, specifically tailored to the demands of modern professional practice. The models of decision-making, problem-solving, and ethical leadership will be explored. In Unit 4: Cultivating phronesis at work, the focus will be shifted to the practical aspect of developing phronesis. The practical strategies and techniques to cultivate wisdom in professional settings will be learned, fostering ethical decision-making, personal growth, and professional excellence.
Finally, in Unit 5: Collective phronesis, organizations, and leadership, the concept of collective phronesis will be explored, examining how organizations can foster a culture of wisdom and ethical practices. This unit is particularly relevant for organizational leaders seeking to transform their workplaces into environments that embody ethical values and excellence. Through this short course, valuable insights, practical tools, and case studies will be gained to apply in the professional practice.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Compare different approaches to professional ethics and identify the uniqueness of a virtue-based approach.
- Identify the phronesis construct and its relevance for professional practice.
- Apply lessons from 1) and 2) to the rough and tumble of their own professional work.
Timeline and Requirements:
The workshop will take place on Friday, June 7, 2024. This workshop is presenter-led and is a fully online experience. This will be conducted synchronously online via Zoom from 10:00 AM - 1:15 PM (ET).

This lecture does not offer CEs for other clinicians not listed below, and we only grant CEs for synchronous attendance of events. Participants must attend the workshop in full and complete the post event survey to be eligible to receive CEs.
